Amazon Prime Video now has two testosterone-fueled action franchises starring muscular heroes: the boxing drama Southpaw with Jake Gyllenhaal and the sandal fantasy The Scorpion King with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Sometimes streaming services have some funny coincidences: With Amazon Prime Video, you can now stream two movies that evoke the most iconic action hero roles of the 1980s. Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger remember, except that the main roles are played by two modern movie stars:Southpaw“with Jake Gyllenhaal and”Scorpion king” with Dwayne Johnson.
Southpaw is a boxer drama and is very reminiscent of the “premise and dramaturgy.”Rockyseries: focuses on boxer Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), who grew up in poor circumstances, but together with his wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams) sought fame and fortune. But then Billy suffers a family tragedy and loses everything, so he enlists the help of grumpy boxing trainer Tick Wills (Forest Whitaker) have to fight…
FILMSTARTS has given Southpaw a solid 3.5 out of 5 starsless about the script Kurt Suter (Sons Of Anarchy) which barely notices the (boxing movie) cliché, but rather a powerful production Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) and a stirring performance by Jake Gyllenhaal.
Also new: The Scorpion King with Dwayne Johnson
Also, Dwayne Johnson is now following in the footsteps of Arnold Schwarzenegger and his Sword and Sorcery classic on Amazon Prime Video.Conan the Barbarian“. The Scorpion King isn’t quite in the class of the great example, but it’s still worth seeing for fantasy fans:
“The Scorpion King” is on paper a “preface”The mummy is back,” featuring Dwayne Johnson’s first appearance as the Scorpion King and legendarily poor CGI quality, really has little to do with it. Instead, it tells how the warrior Mathayus (Johnson) attacked the evil king Memnon (Steven Brand) wants revenge on the mysterious sorceress (Kelly Hu) meet and end up rebelling…
Our FILMSTARTS review (2.5 out of 5 stars) concludes positively: The Scorpion King is nothing more than a brightly colored, squealingly fun and fast-digesting soap bubble of a movie, as pointless as it is smooth, but without the risks and annoying side effects.” That pretty much sums it up. .
