Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach wants to give nursing staff more responsibility. In an interview in the current issue of DIE ZEIT, he says: “I hope that in the future we will have nurses here who also work more like doctors.” According to Lauterbach, there is an urgent need to revamp hospital nursing, referring to the United States, where “specially trained nurses are doing a lot of things that family doctors are doing here.” In Germany, the doctors’ lobby opposes any devolution of power to nursing staff.
The Minister of Health is planning a major reform of hospitals. Among other things, the proposals envisage the establishment of hospitals without working doctors and managed entirely by nursing staff.
