What are the forms of resistance?

Depending on how a person treats stressors, there are three different variants of resistance in the psychological research literature. However, they are commonly used as synonyms. A popular, easy-to-understand explanatory model is the analogy of a tree affected by a storm. This is related to an essay published by American psychologists Stephen Lepore and Tracey Revenson in 2006. In it, the authors describe three ways in which a tree can successfully withstand such a storm:

Transferred to the human psyche: The stress factor puts a strain on a resilient person for a short time, but after a while he returns to normal daily life and is mentally stable.
  • Resilience as reconfiguration: Tree trunks and branches are not strong enough to withstand a storm. However, as the storm subsided, they took on a new shape that reduces the surface area where wind gusts could attack in the future. Transferred to the human psyche: People with this form of resilience adapt during or after stress, changing their behavior or thinking structures to cope with similar experiences in the future without greater psychological stress. .
