Low point: How long will RTL show Formula 1? / Formula 1

RTL now only shows four races live on free TV. Quotas continue to fall, Zandvoort hit a new low. The big question: will the sub-license with Sky be renewed?

Fears were confirmed: in the 15th Formula 1 race of the season at Zandvoort, RTL also had to bow out. Just 2.04 million people watched the race live on free-to-air television from the Cologne-based private broadcaster. This resulted in 17.1 percent. market share, in the target group – 13.1 percent.

This is the worst performance since RTL was able to show four races live per season thanks to sub-licensing. Pay-TV channel Sky exclusively broadcasts Formula 1 races from 2021.

The question is: Will RTL continue in 2023? As dpa reported earlier this year, the sublicense agreement with Sky will run until the end of the current season.

Problem: This year quotas are dropping dramatically. 2.39 million watched the race live at Silverstone. spectators, and the first race in 2022. 2.93 million watched in Imola. The bottom line is that it only averages 2.45 million viewers.

in 2021 the four races averaged 3.13 million fans, and in 2020, when RTL still showed all races, it averaged around four million fans per race.

in 2022 November 13 RTL will still show the race in Brazil live on free-to-air TV.
