Mother Bonding: How Mothers Shape Their Daughters for Life

A child’s connection with his mother is the earliest and most important: it shapes his view of the world, his thoughts and actions. Especially daughters often live in the zone of tension between closeness and distance with their mothers. How does this affect her life?

Of all generational bonds, it is the strongest and most intimate. And perhaps no other relationship in the family network is closer: the relationship between mothers and daughters is as intimate as it is prone to disruption, as intimate as it is strained. This came to light, among other things, when researchers investigated forms of partnership and family life in Germany as part of a long-term study.

They surveyed more than 10,000 people about their relationships and found that half of all daughters regularly discuss personal matters with their mothers, but not even one in three sons. Regular exchange with father again only 13 percent of sons and 15 percent of daughters are looking for them.
