Mud, cold: how will autumn and winter change the war in Ukraine?

Watch the video: Deep mud and freezing cold – how autumn and winter are changing the war in Ukraine?

Gernot Kramper (star) At this point, there is no indication that either side thinks he will take a half-year break. Especially not Ukrainians. And that’s certainly a challenge for both sides now that they have soldiers who absolutely must have winter gear. At -30-40 degrees, you cannot get out of the hut and touch any metal object with your bare hand. The skin just freezes immediately.

Hendrik Holdmann (Stern) Now the cold seasons are just around the corner. How will the war change over the winter?

Gernot Kramper (star) So first comes the wet seasons again. That the movements are getting tougher in general – and we really thought it would be after October, that is, when the idea of war has cooled – we don’t see that at all at the moment. So here’s how. We see an attack by the Ukrainians, another one has been announced and is to come later. We also see that the Russians can certainly point to success. They continue to advance in Donbass. It’s all very small. Then a giant factory is conquered from the gym, so to speak. But looking at it, it’s a very fierce fight. And overall, the war is more intense and involves more casualties than in previous months. At least that’s my impression of what you see from the footage. And we all hoped for more cooling in the winter. However, at a time when both sides are getting so much stronger, it is not visible at the moment, because it is possible to fight in the winter. First of all, it must be said that the real difficulties of the wars in Ukraine are the transitional periods, so to speak, autumn and spring, when the mud season begins in Ukraine, when the ground is very loose and only roads can be driven, so to speak. Because you will disappear everywhere else. And speaking of streets, it must be said that in practice you only have streets in the normally built-up area. But then these field and forest paths also dissolve. So that means: it really interferes with combat. However, there is currently no indication that either side thinks they will take a half-year break, especially the Ukrainians. In that regard, I wouldn’t expect such a strong cooldown for battles. Winters are cooler there, but not every winter is like Moscow in 1940 or 1941, when the temperature reaches -40 degrees. And at the moment, the Russians are not trusted at all. But at this point I must also remind people of the two major Soviet offensives in which the Ukrainians were involved, namely the Russian counterattack against Moscow and Operation Uranos, which choked the Sixth Army at Stalingrad. . Both operations were carried out in extreme cold and this is apparently possible. It gets in the way of a lot of things, especially when there is no winter gear. And that’s certainly a challenge for both sides now that they have soldiers who absolutely must have winter gear. And the Ukrainians really don’t have it on such a scale. And probably not the Russians. But you don’t know if they still have old USSR sleeping bags somewhere, that is, such old materials. They seem to protect everything. But basically there are also battles with major operations in extreme cold – World War II certainly was. Or if you remember that the Americans had advanced far in North Korea during the Korean War, the Chinese also chose the moment of extreme cold to counterattack. It has more to do with geographical situations than the current cold. But this did not stop either side, even if it changes the movement and, above all, the use of the material is, of course, very difficult. So let’s be clear, at -30-40 degrees you can’t leave the hut and touch any metal thing with your bare hands, your skin will just freeze to death immediately. So here’s how. It’s complicated, but it hasn’t stopped the wars yet.
