Mulled wine, bratwurst and roasted almonds: They all exude an unmistakable smell at the Christmas market. Vegetarians who like it spicy will also get their money’s worth.

At the end of November, the Christmas markets open again in many places. The scent of the many delicacies that are offered there draw you in like magic. After all, there is something for everyone: for gourmets or bratwurst lovers through to vegetarians. The latter are happy about the big pans every year all sorts of potato or mushroom dishes. A classic that always tastes good: mushrooms in garlic sauce.

As simple as the dish sounds, it is heavenly delicious! And best of all, you can easily recreate it at home, just like sweet treats like delicate snowballs or Quark stollen without raisins. If it’s particularly cold outside, stock up on this one recipe simply bring the Christmas market into your own four walls. You need for the mushrooms (two portions):

  • 300 g small mushrooms
  • 1 onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • Pfeffer
  • Salt
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives
  • 1 EL Butter

    Olive oil for the pan

For the garlic sauce you will also need:

  • 200 g fresh cream
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • Pfeffer
  • Salt
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives

Now it’s time to prepare the mushrooms in garlic sauce. By the way: If you are not a fan of the white bulb, you can simply leave out the garlic cloves and just mix up a herbal dip instead.

Preparation of mushrooms with garlic sauce like from the Christmas market

  • First, wash the mushrooms. You can do this with a small brush or rub it off with a kitchen towel. If the handle is very long, shorten it. Then peel the onions and garlic and cut both into fine cubes.
  • Heat the olive oil or cooking oil of your choice in a pan. When it sizzles, add the mushrooms. Fry them vigorously for several minutes.
  • Then add the garlic and onions and sauté again for several minutes. Finally, season everything with salt and pepper. Put the chives on top.
  • Meanwhile, prepare the garlic sauce. Peel the garlic cloves and press them into a bowl. Add the crème fraîche and chives, stir well and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Now put the mushrooms on a plate and add the garlic sauce.
