CMA publishes Sony’s statement and Microsoft’s response

Sony and Microsoft’s full response to concerns over CMA’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard has been released.

Britain’s competition authority, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has published two documents from Sony and Microsoft.

The first document is due in 2022. October 28 Sony’s statement on CMA’s concerns over Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

The 22-page document said that Sony, among others, “threatens an industry that is used by hundreds of millions of consumers” and that “the merger will give Microsoft the opportunity and incentive to take over competitors including PlayStation and PlayStation.” Also, ban or restrict access to Call of Duty.

In addition, Sony also believes that indie developers could be hurt if Call of Duty ends up only on Xbox Game Pass. The acquisition would “drive demand for multiple game subscription services to Xbox/Game Pass” and take PlayStation with PlayStation Plus out of the market by making Microsoft the main distribution channel for indie developers.

Microsoft sees things differently. In a second document responding to the CMA’s concerns, the Xbox Group argues that “the merger is substantially pro-competitive by increasing competition in a market long dominated by Sony.”

Microsoft recognizes that Activision content is popular and enjoyed by millions of gamers around the world. But neither Activision nor Call of Duty would have that kind of market power.
