What ice scraper to use?

Commercial ice scrapers are made of plastic and can usually be purchased in stores for a few euros. However, there are qualitative differences: when buying, look for a model with a saw edge so that you can also remove thick layers of ice. Also, the smooth edge of the ice scraper makes sense. The rubber lip on the ice scraper is ideal for removing water films. In principle, the model should also be made of stable plastic so that it does not break under direct exposure to heavy loads.

What kind of ice scrapers should you not use?

Stay away from the credit card! This can be useful for smaller icings, but often fails later. CD cases or stovetop scrapers are just as ineffective – at worst they’ll scratch your glass.

Cold or lukewarm water for frozen windows – does it really work?

It is important that the water remains liquid for a long enough time. Whether you use cold or lukewarm water depends on the outside temperature. For a lukewarm option, you can prepare a watering can or bottles filled with water the night before and, for example, put it next to a heater.

Can my window be damaged by ice scratches?

Almost any ice scraper—metal, plastic, or rubber-coated—can leave scratches on the glass. The reason for this is usually small particles of dirt deposited in the ice layer. When scratched through glass, they act like sandpaper and can leave small scratches. So don’t forget to give the windshield a final wipe, such as the wiper water system, when you park the car the night before. You can also use a spray bottle to apply antifreeze to the windshield.

The so-called defrost function can also be a quick fix if the windows start to fog up from the inside. Just turn the fan all the way up and the mist will disappear.

To prevent the windshields from freezing in the car cabin, be sure to ventilate it regularly. Also, if possible, don’t bring too much snow and moisture inside. So-called exhaust air dehumidifiers are also useful – small cushions absorb excess moisture. The DIY alternative can also be used with…
